India and Bangladesh have shared deep historical, cultural, and economic ties for decades. However, recent incidents of violence against Hindu minorities in Bangladesh have strained this relationship. In a letter to Bangladesh’s Chief Advisor Mohammad Yunus, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reiterated the need for strengthening bilateral ties, emphasizing mutual sensitivity and cooperation. His appeal comes amid rising concerns over the security of minorities and growing instability in Bangladesh.

A Longstanding Partnership

The India-Bangladesh relationship is rooted in shared history, dating back to the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971, where India played a crucial role in its independence from Pakistan. Over the years, both nations have collaborated on trade, security, water-sharing agreements, and regional connectivity. Under Sheikh Hasina’s leadership, relations between Delhi and Dhaka flourished, with India extending diplomatic and economic support to Bangladesh. However, the recent political transition in Bangladesh, marked by the removal of Sheikh Hasina and the establishment of an interim government led by Mohammad Yunus, has led to uncertainty in bilateral relations.

Modi’s Call for Strengthened Ties

On the occasion of Bangladesh’s National Day on March 26, Prime Minister Modi reached out to Yunus, underscoring the importance of a stable and cooperative relationship. He highlighted the historical bond between the two nations and called for mutual respect and sensitivity to each other’s concerns.

“This day stands as a testament to our shared history and sacrifices, which have laid the foundation of our bilateral partnership,” Modi stated. “The spirit of the Liberation War of Bangladesh continues to remain a guiding light for our relationship, which has flourished across multiple domains, bringing tangible benefits to our peoples.”

Reaffirming India’s commitment to the partnership, Modi stressed that peace, stability, and prosperity should be the guiding principles of the India-Bangladesh relationship.

Rising Violence Against Hindus in Bangladesh

The recent surge in violence against Hindu minorities in Bangladesh has emerged as a major point of contention between the two countries. According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), between August 2024 and February 2025, over 2,374 incidents of violence against minorities were reported, though Bangladeshi authorities verified only 1,254 cases. The violence, largely categorized as political in nature, has raised serious concerns in India regarding the safety and well-being of Hindu communities in Bangladesh.

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stressed that India expects Bangladesh to take decisive action against the perpetrators, irrespective of political affiliations. “While 98% of the incidents have been classified as political, we urge the Bangladeshi government to ensure thorough investigations and hold those responsible accountable,” he stated.

Concern Over the Release of Extremists

Adding to the concerns, the release of extremists convicted of violent crimes has further destabilized the security situation in Bangladesh. India has expressed unease over these developments, fearing they could lead to increased communal tensions and weaken Bangladesh’s internal stability. The issue of extremism has long been a shared concern for both nations, and India has emphasized the need for a firm stance against radical elements that threaten regional peace.

India-Bangladesh Relations at a Crossroads

The current situation marks a critical juncture in India-Bangladesh relations. While both nations have historically maintained strong ties, recent events threaten to disrupt this partnership. India has made it clear that it expects Bangladesh to uphold its commitments to protecting minorities and maintaining stability.

Despite the challenges, Modi’s outreach to Yunus signals India’s willingness to continue working towards a cooperative and mutually beneficial relationship. Moving forward, much will depend on how Bangladesh addresses these concerns and ensures that the rights of all communities are safeguarded. The coming months will be crucial in determining the trajectory of India-Bangladesh ties, with both nations having a shared interest in peace and stability in the region.
