Amid the Israel-Hamas conflict, the Congress Working Committee Monday reiterated its long-standing support for the rights of the Palestinian people to land, self-government, and to live with dignity while also calling for an immediate ceasefire and negotiations on all outstanding issues.

The resolution passed by the Congress Working Committee (CWC) expressed deep concern over the conflict going on between Israel and Hamas and urged a ceasefire while also affirming the party’s backing for the rights of the Palestinian people. It added, “The CWC calls for an immediate cease-fire and for negotiations to begin on all outstanding issues including the imperative issues that have given rise to the present conflict.”

The statement comes a day after Congress’ General Secretary in charge of Communications Jairam Ramesh, said, “The Indian National Congress condemns the brutal attacks on the people of Israel.” It added, “The Indian National Congress has always believed that the legitimate aspirations of the Palestinian people for a life of self-respect, equality, and dignity must be fulfilled only through a process for dialogue and negotiations while ensuring the legitimate national security interests of the Israeli people.”  “Violence of any type never provides a solution and must,” said Ramesh.

Shortly after the attack on Israel, PM Modi took to X and said “Deeply shocked by the news of terrorist attacks in Israel. Our thoughts and prayers are with the innocent victims and their families. We stand in solidarity with Israel at this difficult hour.”

After witnessing the deadliest attack in decades, Israel has since declared itself in a state of war after Palestinian militants launched hundreds of rockets from the blockaded Gaza Strip toward Israel on Oct 7. As of Oct 9, hundreds of people have been killed in both Israel and Gaza and thousands of others have been injured.

The BJP on Monday accused the Congress of supporting terror organizations after the Congress Working Committee affirmed its support for the rights of the Palestinian people to land, self-government, and live with dignity. In a post on X, Union minister Pralhad Joshi asked how will Congress protect the nation and its citizens when it is “openly standing with violence”.

“Congress at it again! Supporting terror organizations and terrorism while innocent civilians lose their lives to bullets,” he said. “With this stand, the leading party of I.N.D.I Alliance has exposed itself to the nation. How will the party protect its nation and citizens when it is openly standing with violence,” Mr Joshi added.
