India’s Scientific Ambition Soars with Unprecedented Budget Boost

New Delhi celebrated National Science Day 2025 with a resounding affirmation of India’s dedication to science and innovation. Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh, speaking at Vigyan Bhavan, highlighted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s unwavering commitment to scientific advancement, underscored by a historic budget increase across key science departments.

Over the past decade, India’s investment in science and technology has witnessed a dramatic surge. The Department of Science and Technology (DST) experienced a staggering 926% budget increase, while the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR) and the Department of Space (DOS) saw substantial growth of 230% and 139%, respectively. This financial commitment reflects India’s ambition to become a global leader in research and innovation.

Dr. Singh emphasized India’s remarkable progress, noting its transformation into the world’s third-largest startup ecosystem and its rise in the Global Innovation Index from 80th to 39th. The historic Chandrayaan-3 landing on the Moon’s south pole and ISRO’s successful SPADEX mission exemplify India’s growing scientific prowess. With a focus on quantum computing and advanced technologies, India is poised to lead in cutting-edge research.

The National Science Day 2025 celebrations, themed “Empowering Indian Youth for Global Leadership in Science & Innovation for Viksit Bharat,” highlighted the government’s investment in young scientists. Dr. Singh launched DST’s Electric Vehicle Solutions initiative, fostering indigenous innovation and sustainability in the automotive sector. He also announced a ₹1,000 crore venture capital fund for space startups, ₹2,000 crore for Mission Mausam, and the ₹50,000 crore Anusandhan National Research Fund (NRF), further strengthening India’s scientific ecosystem.

The government’s vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat, driven by homegrown technologies, was reiterated. The Ministry of Science and Technology is focused on translating research into practical applications, benefiting local industries and communities. Nine new Inclusive Technology Business Incubators (NIDHI-iTBIs) and ₹75 crore in funding for nine universities under PURSE were announced, promoting entrepreneurship and regional innovation.

The event, attended by prominent scientists and officials, underscored India’s commitment to scientific excellence and innovation. Students from 22 states participated online, reinforcing the nation’s dedication to empowering its youth to become leaders in Viksit Bharat 2047.
