July 7, less than 24 hours after springing a surprise wedding announcement. This will be the Aam Aadmi Party leader’s second marriage.
The families of Bhagwant Mann and his wife-to-be, Dr Gurpreet Kaur, did not make the news of their upcoming marriage public till Wednesday, July 6. Even their relationship was kept carefully under wraps.
WHEN BHAGWANT MANN MET GURPREET KAUR
Bhagwant Mann and Dr Gurpreet Kaur have known each other for four years. Family sources say Gurpreet met Mann in 2019 and campaigned with him when he contested Lok Sabha elections. She also witnessed his swearing-in ceremony.
Family sources say that Gurpreet Kaur was known to Bhagwant Mann’s mother and sister. Both had approved of the relationship, but decided to keep it under wraps till a day before the wedding on July 7.
Mann’s mother was keen for her son to settle down with Dr Gurpreet Kaur after becoming the Punjab CM. He is the first Punjab politician to get married while serving as chief minister.

The marriage plans were put on hold till the first cabinet expansion in Punjab. But in the meantime, preparations for the ceremony were reportedly in full swing.ADVERTISEMENT
This became clear from the arrival of Gurpreet Kaur’s elder sister Navneet Kaur Neeru, who is an American citizen. She arrived in their hometown, Pehowa in Haryana, 20 days ago.
Gurpreet Kaur’s family had shifted to Mohali just six months back. Bhagwant Mann himself lived in Mohali for quite some time.
Interestingly, both families did not disclose anything about the wedding to their close relatives, who told reporters that they came to know about the upcoming nuptials after the news broke on social media and news channels.
MEET THE BRIDE
Dr Gurpreet Kaur is the youngest of three sisters. One of her sisters is married to the son of former cabinet minister, the late Jaswinder Singh Sandhu. Her maternal uncles also have a political background.
The bride’s father, Inderjeet Singh, also holds Canadian citizenship. Both her sisters settled abroad after getting married. While one elder sister, Navneet Kaur Neeru, is an American citizen, the other, Kamaljeet Kaur Gaggu, lives in Australia.
Dr Gurpreet Kaur did her schooling at Tagore Public School in Pehowa, before she graduated from higher secondary school in Chandigarh and She later completed her medical degree in 2017 from an Ambala-based medical college, and also practised in a hospital in Ambala.
Her family originally hails from Ghumtala Gadu village. Her father is a former village headman and owns over 40 acres of agricultural land. Her mother, Rajendra Kaur alias Raj, is a housewife.
As both Bhagwant Mann and Dr Gurpreet Kaur profess Sikh religion, their marriage will be solemnised at a Gurdwara as per the traditional Anand Karaj, in accordance with Sikh rituals.
