The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has announced its first list of seven candidates for the upcoming Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Elections 2024. The elections, scheduled to take place in three phases on September 18, September 25, and October 1, will see candidates vying for seats across 90 assembly constituencies, with results expected to be declared on October 4.
In its statement, the AAP revealed its candidates for seven key assembly constituencies in the region. The candidates include Fayaz Ahmed Sofi from Pulwama, Muddasir Hasan from Rajpora, Sheikh Fida Hussain from Devsar, Mohsin Shafkat Mir from Dooru, Mehraj Din Malik from Doda, Yasir Shafi Matto from Doda West, and Mudassir Azmat Mir from Banihal.
The announcement marks a significant step for AAP as it seeks to establish a foothold in Jammu and Kashmir’s political landscape. The party’s decision to contest in these specific constituencies reflects its strategy to make inroads in both urban and rural areas of the Union Territory.
In addition to the candidate list, AAP also unveiled its roster of star campaigners for the Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections. The list features 40 prominent figures, including AAP National Convener Arvind Kejriwal, his wife Sunita Kejriwal, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, party leader Manish Sisodia, and ministers Atishi, Sanjay Singh, and Gopal Rai. The party’s high-profile campaign is expected to draw significant attention as the election approaches.
The announcement of AAP’s candidates comes in the context of the first assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir since the abrogation of Article 370 on August 5, 2019, which led to the bifurcation of the state into the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. The region has been without an elected government since June 2018, when the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) withdrew from its coalition with the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), leading to the dissolution of the assembly and the imposition of Governor’s rule.
As political parties gear up for the polls, the Aam Aadmi Party’s entry into the fray adds a new dimension to the contest in Jammu and Kashmir, promising a dynamic and closely-watched electoral battle.
