The Jinnah tower located on Mahatma Gandhi Road in Andhra’s Guntur was painted in tricolour by YSRCP MLA Mohammad Mustafa. On January 26, Hindu Vahini activists were arrested by police for trying to unfurl the Indian flag at Jinnah tower.
The Jinnah tower located in Mahatma Gandhi Road in Andhra Pradesh’s Guntur got a coat of tricolour on Tuesday, February 1. The effort was organised by YSRCP MLA Mohammad Mustafa.
This comes a week after police detained Hindu Vahini activists for wanting to hoist the national flag atop Jinnah Tower on Republic Day. Jinnah tower, located on Mahatma Gandhi road, is a prominent and iconic structure in Guntur city.
The police action drew flack from the BJP, and others condemned the detention of Hindu Vahini activists.
The Guntur mayor explained that, at the request of various groups, it was decided to decorate the tower with the tricolour and to construct a pole nearby to hoist the national flag.
He alleged that BJP leaders are trying to spoil the peaceful environment of Guntur where people of all the communities and religions live peacefully.
“BJP state unit chief Somu Veerraju is trying to make an issue out of this and disturb the peace in the region,” he alleged.
Guntur East MLA Mohammad Mustafa said that the National flag will be hoisted near the tower in the presence of leaders of all political parties.
Earlier, the Andhra Pradesh BJP had demanded the YS Jagan-led YSRCP government to rename the Jinnah tower in Guntur.
BJP national secretary Y Surya Kumar, Telangana BJP MLA Raja Singh and Andhra Pradesh BJP state unit chief Somu Veeraraju had demanded renaming the Jinnah tower with APJ Abdul Kalam.
BJP leader Vishnuvardhan Reddy even threatened the Andhra government to rename the Jinnah tower or else party activists will demolish the tower and allot a new name to the centre.
