On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to the heroes of the 1999 Kargil War at the Kargil War Memorial in Dras, Ladakh. The solemn ceremony honored the brave soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

Prime Minister Modi laid a wreath at the Kargil War Memorial, also known as the Dras War Memorial, commemorating the valor and dedication of the Indian armed forces during the Kargil conflict. The war, which began in response to the infiltration of Pakistani soldiers and terrorists into the Kargil sector of Ladakh, concluded on July 26, 1999, with India reclaiming its strategic positions.

The annual observance of Kargil Vijay Diwas marks India’s victory over Pakistan in the Kargil district. During the conflict, Indian forces successfully regained control of key positions that had been occupied by Pakistani intruders. Despite initial denials from Pakistan, evidence left behind by casualties and testimonies from prisoners of war exposed the involvement of Pakistani paramilitary forces, led by General Ashraf Rashid, under the leadership of then Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Army Chief Pervez Musharraf.

The Kargil War Memorial stands as a testament to the bravery and sacrifices of the soldiers who fought in the conflict. Located near the Line of Control (LoC) in the Kargil district of Ladakh, the memorial is a place of remembrance and reflection for the nation.

During his visit, Prime Minister Modi emphasized the importance of remembering the sacrifices of the soldiers and reaffirmed the nation’s commitment to safeguarding its sovereignty. He expressed his gratitude to the families of the fallen heroes and acknowledged the enduring spirit of the Indian armed forces.

The Kargil Vijay Diwas serves as a reminder of the courage and resilience of the Indian military and a tribute to those who laid down their lives for the country’s security and honor.
