Kolkata’s first multi-tier underpass is all set to open soon at New Town Biswa Bangla Gate. This would be Kolkata’s first underground car tunnel in New Town.
Kolkata’s first multi-tier underpass will be opened soon at New Town Biswa-Bangla gate. The construction work for the underpass started in July 2022 and is now partially ready for vehicles and pedestrians. With this underpass, the traffic of New Town, Rajarhat and the airport will be eased. The underpass is all set to get open by this month.
The upper tier of the underpass will be for cars and two-wheelers coming from the Salt Lake and Karunamayee side straight towards the Nazrul tirtha and Unitech side and vice-versa. According to sources of KMDA, the second tier of the underpass has been built just 8m below the first level, which will work only for pedestrians.
The four wheelers, light motor vehicles and two wheelers will move down from the first tier and from the second pedestrians will cross. Apart from these, buses and heavy vehicles like trucks will move from the main road as it is.
The four-lane underpass will be approximately 7 metres wide and 320 metres long which crosses the Biswa Bangla Sarani just below the Biswa Bangla gate at New Town. This costs around Rs 68 crores to build this underpass.
It is Kolkata’s first underground car tunnel at Main Arterial Road below Biswa Bangla Gate. As per sources it will be open by this month soon. This is the phase-I of Integrated Project Newtown-Airport Underpass to make a swift movement of traffics in Airport, Salt lake, Rajarhat and Newtown areas. Keeping Airports way in mind this will be beneficial for people to divide the traffic.
