Bhojpuri singer Neha Singh Rathore reacted to the Uttar Pradesh Police’s notice to her over her song ‘UP Me Ka Ba- Season 2’ and said the government only issues notices, but does not give any answers to her questions.

Bhojpuri singer Neha Singh Rathore was served a police notice over her song ‘UP Me Ka Ba- Season 2’, which criticised the Uttar Pradesh government over the death of a mother-daughter duo in Kanpur Dehat during an eviction drive. Speaking with India Today, Neha Rathore said this is not the first time that she has raised questions against the government using songs. She said the government cannot give answers and only issues notices.

The Bhojpuri singer said a team from Kanpur Police came to her house at around 8 pm on Tuesday to serve her the notice. The notice was served under Section 160 (Police officer’s power to require attendance of witnesses) of the Code of Criminal Procedure. Neha Rathore was accused of inciting hatred among the public through her song.

Talking to India Today, Neha Rathore said, “I have always tried to carry out my responsibilities as a folk singer. I have been raising questions against governments using folk songs. This is not the first time that I used the ‘Ka Ba’ format to raise questions against the UP government.”

“During the elections, too, I raised some questions and they have not been able to give answers till now. They cannot give answers, but only issue notices,” she added.

She said the authorities first went to her in-laws’ house to serve the notice but things didn’t work out there. “Afterwards, a team of six to seven police personnel came as if they were on their way to catch a big criminal,” said the Bhojpuri singer.

Neha Rathore said a woman first called her husband and said she was a UPSC aspirant and she needed some help to crack the entrance test. The woman asked to meet her husband but they did not pay heed to the caller. They received another call just around 15 minutes later saying the caller was from Kanpur Dehat. Neha said the caller asked her to collect the police notice from there.

“I don’t understand what big crimes I have committed that they needed to lie,” Neha Rathore told India Today.

Talking about the questions in the notice, she said the police posed the questions in such a way that they will “trap” her regardless of her answer. “I will not give any reply without speaking to a lawyer,” she added.

Neha Rathore also clarified that she is not targeting any party and only asked questions to the party which happened to be in power. “Do I ask the Samajwadi Party about the situation in UP? No, right?” she added. The Bhojpuri singer said she will not stop singing about the issues of the common people.
