The United Kingdom has elected Foreign Minister and Conservative Party leader Liz Truss as its next Prime Minister on Monday. Succeeding ousted Boris Johnson as British Prime Minister, Liz Truss defeated her rival, former finance minister Rishi Sunak, to win the Tory leadership contest.
Liz Truss defeated rival Rishi Sunak with 81,326 votes to 60,399 among party members.
Delivering her victory speech, Liz Truss said, “I am honoured to be elected Leader of the Conservative Party. Thank you for putting your trust in me to lead and deliver for our great country. I will take bold action to get all of us through these tough times, grow our economy, and unleash the United Kingdom’s potential.”
Referring to former UK PM, Liz Truss said, “Boris (Johnson), you got Brexit done, you crushed Jeremy Corbyn, you rolled out the vaccine and you stood up to Vladimir Putin”.
Liz Truss concluded her victory speech by promising to deliver. “I know, we’ll deliver, we’ll deliver, we’ll deliver,” Liz Truss said.
Liz Truss is the third female Prime Minister in Britain, after Margaret Thatcher and Theresa May.
