In a significant effort to reclaim public land and restore environmental integrity, the Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) has successfully completed a major demolition drive along the banks of the Kukrail river in Akbarnagar. Initiated under the directives of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the operation targeted illegal encroachments spanning a 24.5-acre area.
Officials from LDA confirmed that the demolition work, which commenced in December last year, concluded with the removal of 1,169 illegal residential properties and over 100 commercial structures. Utilizing heavy machinery such as bulldozers, the drive aimed to clear the river bed of encroachments that had accumulated over time.
The scope of the operation extended beyond mere residential and commercial properties, encompassing the removal of religious structures belonging to both Hindu and Muslim communities. A total of 1,320 structures, including these religious sites, were demolished to ensure compliance with the court’s orders mandating the eviction.
Recent efforts on Tuesday focused on clearing the debris left behind by the demolitions, marking a crucial phase in the restoration of the area’s natural landscape. Families displaced from Akbarnagar due to the demolition were relocated under the PM Awas Yojna to alternative accommodations in other parts of the city, with over 1,800 families resettled thus far.
Looking ahead, the state government has proposed plans to develop the cleared area into an eco-tourism hub, aiming to utilize the reclaimed land for sustainable recreational and environmental purposes.
This court-mandated eviction drive, which began on June 10, is part of a broader initiative by the LDA to uphold the rule of law, reclaim public spaces, and promote sustainable development practices in Lucknow. With the final phases of the eviction drive expected to conclude soon, the LDA remains committed to restoring the ecological balance along the Kukrail river and ensuring compliance with legal directives concerning land use and development.
