Manipur on High Alert Amid Influx of Kuki Militants from Myanmar

A security alert has been issued across Manipur following intelligence reports of over 900 Kuki militants infiltrating villages in the Imphal Valley from Myanmar. The intelligence suggests that the militants are preparing to launch coordinated attacks around September 28, sparking major concerns for the region’s security.

Intelligence Report Sparks Action

Kuldeep Singh, security adviser to the BJP-led government in Manipur, confirmed the intelligence input, stating that authorities are acting on the information unless it is proven otherwise. “Unless and until it is proved wrong, we believe that it is 100% correct,” Singh said during a press briefing on Friday, underscoring the gravity of the situation.

According to the intelligence, the militants have split into smaller groups of about 30 members each. These groups have reportedly positioned themselves along the peripheries of the state, planning to target villages inhabited by the Meitei community.

Heightened Security Measures

The alert was issued just a day after the Indian Army, in collaboration with the Manipur police, recovered a large cache of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) in the hilly regions of Imphal East. The joint operation, conducted near the villages of Bongjang and Itham, successfully averted a potentially devastating attack. The discovery of these explosives has added urgency to the security measures being taken.

Security agencies have ramped up vigilance across the state, with district authorities and border units of the Manipur Police and Assam Rifles on high alert. Singh also emphasized the importance of monitoring stockpiles of explosives, with district magistrates (DMs) instructed to ensure all licensed owners are maintaining proper inventory.

Focus on Prevention

Authorities are focusing on securing all access points to the Imphal Valley, with connected roads and villages within a 5km radius of the hills being scrutinized for hidden stockpiles of weapons or explosives. As part of the preventive measures, Singh mentioned that the use of drones would also be explored to monitor potential threats.

With the state already on edge, the situation in Manipur remains volatile as security forces brace for potential militant activity.
