The National Commission for Women (NCW) has called for an FIR against Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mahua Moitra following her derogatory remark about NCW chairperson Rekha Sharma. This development came after Moitra’s comment on a video showing Sharma’s arrival at a stampede site in Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras, where a man was seen holding an umbrella for Sharma. Moitra’s now-deleted post on the social media platform X stated, “She is too busy holding up her boss’s pajamas.”
The NCW took suo moto cognizance of Moitra’s comment, describing it as crude, outrageous, and a violation of a woman’s right to dignity. “The Commission observed that this remark attracts Section 79 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita, 2023,” the NCW stated in a post on X. The commission strongly condemned the defamatory remarks and called for strict action against Moitra, demanding an FIR be registered and a detailed action report communicated within three days.
In response to the NCW’s post, Moitra took to X, sarcastically urging the Delhi Police to act swiftly on the suo moto orders. “Come on Delhi Police please take action immediately on these suo moto orders. Am in Nadia in case you need me in the next 3 days to make a quick arrest. I Can Hold My Own Umbrella,” she wrote, reposting the NCW’s call for action.
Moitra’s controversial remarks and subsequent social media response have sparked a significant backlash, with the NCW emphasizing the need for accountability and respect for women’s dignity in public discourse. This incident has intensified the ongoing political tensions between the TMC and other political entities, highlighting the critical need for maintaining decorum and respect in political commentary.
