As per the government notification, Parliament House employees will don new uniforms during the special session starting from September 18. The gender-neutral uniforms have been created by the National Institute of Fashion Technology.

The internal circular issued by the Lok Sabha Secretariat, the marshals, security staff and officials, chamber attendants, and drivers have been issued new uniforms. They have to wear the uniform once the new parliament building starts functioning.

Amid the row over the agenda of the special session of Parliament called from September 18 to 22, a fresh debate has started over the new dress code which includes kamal print, khaki pants, and Manipuri headgear. The first look of the new dresses has been unveiled. The lotus motif has already sparked a controversy with the Congress questioning its justification.

Parliament staff including chamber attendants, officers, security personnel, drivers, and marshals. Officers from all five key branches of the Parliament secretariat, reporting, table office, notice office, legislative branch, and security will sport new uniforms in this session.

Khaki trousers, cream-colored jackets, cream shirts with pink lotus motifs printed on them, bright-colored sarees with jackets for women, and headgear for marshals’ figures in the new dress code. Security personnel at the Parliament building, instead of safari suits, will now wear camouflage pattern clothes similar to those worn by military personnel.

The bureaucrats will wear a magenta or deep pink Nehru jacket which will replace the band gala suit.

The new uniform is to add an Indian touch to the dress of the Parliament staff. The new design has come from NIFTs as all 18 NIFTs were asked for suggestions for new designs for the uniforms. An expert committee went through the suggestions and then finalized the new uniform.

The Congress earlier criticized the calling of a special session without giving out the agenda. Now the lotus print on some of the dresses has invited a fresh offensive.

The highly-anticipated special session of the Parliament will begin next week. While speculations are rife about the agenda, the government’s decision to bring new uniforms for the Parliament House employees has also triggered a huge controversy. The Congress accused the BJP of making the “Parliament a one-sided partisan thing.”

The parliament session is set to begin on September 18 in the old building. The parliament proceedings are expected to shift to the new building on September 19 on Ganesh Chaturthi, which is considered auspicious for making new beginnings.
