IMD Issues Red Alert as Heavy Rains Batter Delhi; Further Downpours Forecast

Heavy rain pounded Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) on Sunday evening, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to upgrade its weather warning from an orange alert to a red alert, indicating the likelihood of intense rainfall and severe disruptions in the coming hours.

By late evening, torrential downpours had lashed several parts of the capital, with visuals from Kartavya Path and India Gate showing sheets of rain and low visibility, painting a dramatic monsoon picture in the heart of Delhi.

Widespread Waterlogging, But Minimal Traffic Chaos

Despite the intensity of the rainfall, traffic disruptions remained limited, largely due to it being a weekend. However, multiple low-lying areas across Delhi reported significant waterlogging, putting pressure on municipal drainage systems and emergency response teams.

IMD's Latest Warning: Thunderstorms, Lightning & Gusty Winds

In its latest bulletin, the IMD forecasted heavy to very heavy rain in Delhi and adjoining areas over the next few hours. The showers are expected to be accompanied by:

  • Thunderstorms and lightning

  • Gusty winds reaching speeds of 30–40 km/h

The red alert, the most severe in the IMD’s alert system, will remain in effect through Monday, and residents have been advised to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary.

Authorities on Alert

Emergency services, including the Delhi Disaster Management Authority and local civic bodies, are on standby. Officials have urged citizens to avoid waterlogged zones, take precautions against falling trees or weak structures, and monitor official advisories closely.

What a Red Alert Means

A red alert signifies "take action", indicating extremely bad weather that is expected to disrupt daily life and may pose a risk to safety and property.
