CM Bhagwant Mann on Tuesday shared that his government had managed to ‘rope in major investments from Germany’, implying that BMW agreed to setting up a unit in Punjab.
In a major embarrassment to the Aam Aadmi Party-led (AAP) Punjab government, the German luxury car manufacturer BMW denied reports that it was setting up a new plant in the state. BMW Group India has no plans for setting up additional manufacturing operations in Punjab, the automaker said in a statement.
The update holds relevance as Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann on Tuesday shared that his government managed to ‘rope in major investments from Germany’. “A meeting was held with their top officials at the head office of the world-famous car company BMW… They agreed to set up a unit related to car parts in Punjab on a large scale. Now there is only one plant in Chennai..,” the chief minister shared.
Following BMW Group India’s clarification, the Opposition was quick to see the loophole and deemed BMW’s statement as a major humiliation to CM Mann. Tearing into the chief minister, Pargat Singh of the Congress party shared, “Bhagwant Mann’s yesterday’s announcement that BMW is setting up a plant in Punjab has been refuted by BMW. He owes an explanation to Punjab after this embarrassing revelation. Was it some miscommunication, habitual AAP lies or insatiable urge for publicity which was behind it
“I want to clarify that for any international company has a country office and head office. Bhagwant Mann met the officials of BMW at the head office in Germany. And when the chief minister offered a plant set up, BMW agreed to it. But it takes time for processes to happen. On February 23-24, 2023, BMW agreed to come for a meeting in Punjab. The previous governments have signed MOUs which have gone into the dustbin. Punjab knows its chief ministers would go abroad and buy khajoor (dates) trees, but now, for the first time, Bhagwant Mann has done this,” the spokesperson said.
