Padma Parvati Lakshmi Vaidynathan was born in Madras (now Chennai), India, into a Tamil Brahmin family.[2][3][4][5][6][7] Her mother Vijaya is a retired oncology nurse. Her parents divorced when she was two years old. Lakshmi graduated from William Workman High School in City of Industry, California.
