Prime Minister Narendra Modi participated in the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Central Election Committee (CEC) meeting today to finalize the party’s candidates for the upcoming assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir. The meeting, held in the national capital, also included BJP President JP Nadda, Home Minister Amit Shah, and other key CEC members who discussed the party’s strategy and candidate selection with leaders from Jammu and Kashmir.
This significant meeting comes after a series of discussions last week where Jammu and Kashmir leaders met with Nadda and Shah to narrow down the list of probable candidates. The BJP is focusing on fielding strong candidates in the region, particularly in the Jammu area, which has been a party stronghold since 2014.
The assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, which has 90 constituencies, will take place in three phases: on September 18, September 25, and October 1. This will be the first assembly election in the Union Territory since its reorganization in 2019. The BJP is aiming to defend its position against a resurgent Congress, which has formed an alliance with the National Conference, posing a substantial challenge in the Jammu region.
The BJP’s CEC is also set to meet with leaders from Haryana to finalize candidates for the assembly elections there. Haryana, like Jammu and Kashmir, will hold its elections on October 1, with vote counting scheduled for October 4.
In the previous assembly elections held in 2014, when Jammu and Kashmir was still a full-fledged state, the BJP secured 25 seats. The party is now working diligently to maintain its influence in the region while countering the growing challenge from the Congress-National Conference alliance.
The political landscape in both Jammu and Kashmir and Haryana is heating up as parties gear up for a fiercely contested election season. The BJP’s leadership is leaving no stone unturned in its efforts to ensure a strong performance in both regions.
