Sunak arrived in New Delhi on Friday for the G20 Leaders’ Summit and started the three-day visit with an interaction with British Council students and staff with his wife Akshata Murty ahead of the first set of official multilateral discussions taking place today.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi met his British counterpart Rishi Sunak on the side-lines of the G20 Summit here on Saturday and held a bilateral meeting with his UK counterpart and discussed ways to deepen trade linkages and boost investment.
After the meeting, PM Modi said: “Great to have met Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Delhi. We discussed ways to deepen trade linkages and boost investment.” The Prime Minister also said: “India and the UK will keep working for a prosperous and sustainable planet.”
Taking to X earlier, Sunak said G20 leaders are meeting at a time of enormous challenges and the world is looking to the G20 once again to provide leadership.
“15 years ago, G20 leaders came together for the first time to restore global growth after the financial crisis. We meet at a time of enormous challenges – the world is looking to the G20 once again to provide leadership. Together I believe we can address these challenges,” Sunak wrote on X.
This is Rishi Sunak’s first official visit to India since he became UK’s Prime Minister. Rishi Sunak, who arrived here on Friday, held talks with Modi after the first session of the G20 Summit. Earlier, Mr Sunak greeted Modi with a namaste as the latter received him at the venue.
UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who is in India along with his wife Akshata Murthy to attend the G20 summit in New Delhi, was seen spending time with students at the British Council of India on Friday. Sunak shared photos of his visit to the British Council on Instagram on Friday and one specific picture which caught the eye of many was of him using boAt headphones while interacting with children.
On Friday, boAt CEO Aman Gupta reacted to Sunak wearing the headphones and welcomed Sunak to India. “Bharat mein aapka boAt boAt Swaagat,” Gupta wrote and shared a screenshot of the photo, in which Sunak could be seen wearing the headphones.
On arriving in India for the G20 summit, Sunak said that he was excited to be back in India, “a country that is very near and dear to me”. “It’s obviously special. I saw somewhere that I was referred to as India’s son-in-law, which I hope was meant affectionately,” he told reporters on Friday.
