Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to attend the UN General Assembly’s high-level meeting in New York this September, according to the preliminary program released by Assembly President Dennis Francis’ office. The program, made public on Monday, has Prime Minister Modi’s speech scheduled for the afternoon session on September 26. Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and the Prime Minister of Nepal are also scheduled to speak in the same session.

This will be Prime Minister Modi’s fifth address to the General Assembly during the annual week-long meeting that attracts presidents, kings, prime ministers, and other senior leaders to the UN headquarters. Prime Minister Modi previously addressed the Assembly remotely during the Covid pandemic in 2020. Last year, he visited the UN in June for the International Day of Yoga, an initiative he launched during his first address in 2014, but did not attend the September high-level meeting.

The high-level meeting is a platform where participants outline their international policies and comment on global developments. These speeches are closely watched, but the more significant work occurs behind the scenes, where leaders hold bilateral meetings and participate in various forums. In previous high-level meetings, dozens of international leaders sought meetings with Prime Minister Modi, underscoring his influential presence on the global stage.

Prime Minister Modi delivers his speeches in Hindi, with simultaneous translations into the six official languages of the UN.

The schedule is subject to change, and Prime Minister Modi’s speech time may be adjusted. Currently, it is slated for between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. in New York, which corresponds to 12:30 a.m. to 3:30 a.m. in India on September 27.

Prime Minister Modi’s participation in the UN General Assembly reflects India’s active engagement in global diplomacy and its commitment to addressing international issues through dialogue and collaboration.
