A Step Towards Solar Energy Adoption

The Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Yojana (PMSGY) has generated a strong response in Odisha, with 93,367 households registering for the scheme. Launched in 2024, this initiative aims to promote solar energy adoption by providing subsidies for installing rooftop solar panels. The scheme is expected to reduce electricity costs, promote sustainable energy use, and strengthen energy security across the country.

Odisha Government’s Support for the Initiative

Addressing the Odisha Assembly on Wednesday, Deputy Chief Minister KV Singh Deo highlighted the impact of the scheme in the state. So far, 2,740 beneficiaries have received benefits under the initiative. To facilitate the program’s success, the Odisha government has allocated ₹100 crore in financial assistance.

District-Wise Registrations: Bhadrak Leads the Way

Among the districts, Bhadrak has recorded the highest number of registrations, with 17,167 applicants, followed by Ganjam, where 14,189 households have signed up. As the number of registrations continues to grow, the government remains committed to expanding the scheme’s reach to benefit even more citizens.

Key Features of the PM Surya Ghar Yojana

The Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Yojana is a central government initiative aimed at:

  • Encouraging solar energy adoption among households.
  • Providing financial subsidies for rooftop solar panel installation.
  • Reducing electricity bills and enhancing energy security.
  • Supporting India’s renewable energy goals by increasing solar power usage.

To accelerate the adoption of solar energy, the Odisha Renewable Energy Development Agency (OREDA) Limited has partnered with Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL) through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This partnership aims to expand Odisha’s renewable energy footprint by ensuring hassle-free rooftop solar installations for residents.

Tata Power’s Role in the Initiative

Tata Power, one of India’s leading integrated power companies, plays a crucial role in the scheme’s implementation. The company, which manages power distribution in Odisha through its four DISCOMs (power distribution companies), will ensure seamless execution of the program.

TPREL will be listed as a preferred solar partner by OREDA and will provide:

  • Reliable and efficient solar solutions with lifetime support.
  • Awareness campaigns at high-footfall locations like airports, malls, and railway stations.
  • Educational sessions on renewable energy for local vendors.
  • Technical training programs for rooftop solar installation and maintenance workers.

Officials’ Statements on the Initiative

Saidutta Biplab Keshari Pradhan, CEO of OREDA Limited, emphasized the significance of harnessing Odisha’s vast solar energy potential.

“Odisha is blessed with abundant solar energy resources, which must be utilized effectively to meet the state’s growing energy demands sustainably. Our partnership with Tata Power is a significant step toward accelerating the adoption of renewable energy. With Tata Power’s expertise and OREDA’s resources, we will empower consumers and contribute to the state’s energy goals.”

Praveer Sinha, CEO & MD of Tata Power, highlighted the company’s commitment to Odisha’s energy transition.

“This collaboration with OREDA underscores Tata Power’s dedication to the state and its people. We are proud to support the PM Surya Ghar Yojana and align with the state government’s vision of mainstreaming solar power.”

Expected Benefits of the PM Surya Ghar Yojana

The PM Surya Ghar Yojana is set to bring multiple benefits to households and the overall energy ecosystem:

  • Lower Electricity Bills – Solar-powered homes will experience a significant reduction in electricity costs.
  • Energy Independence – By generating power from the sun, households will rely less on traditional electricity sources.
  • Environmental Sustainability – Increased use of solar energy will help reduce carbon emissions and dependence on fossil fuels.
  • Employment Opportunities – The initiative will create jobs in the solar energy sector, including installation, maintenance, and manufacturing.

A Brighter Future with Solar Energy

The overwhelming response to the PM Surya Ghar Yojana in Odisha reflects a growing awareness and enthusiasm for solar energy adoption. With strong government support, strategic private partnerships, and active public participation, the scheme is poised to play a transformative role in India’s renewable energy landscape.

As registrations continue to rise, Odisha is well on its way to becoming a leader in solar power adoption, setting an example for other states to follow. The PM Surya Ghar Yojana is not just a scheme—it is a vision for a greener, self-reliant, and sustainable future for India.
