Union Minister Smriti Irani on Wednesday slammed Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, saying the latter is politically unproductive and should not dare to bring down the productivity of Lok Sabha.

Union Minister Smriti Irani on Wednesday hit out at Congress MP Rahul Gandhi for causing a ruckus in the Lok Sabha over various issues during the ongoing Monsoon Session, and said the latter was adamant about bringing down the productivity of the House.

She also accused the Congress leader of disrespecting Parliamentary proceedings.

Addressing a press conference, Irani said, “A gentleman [Rahul Gandhi], who is politically ‘unproductive’, is adamant about bringing down the productivity of the Lok Sabha. Today, yet again, he wants to ensure that a healthy, productive debate and discussion does not take place in Parliament.

His entire political history has been dotted with showing disrespect to parliamentary procedures and constitutional means of engagement. He needs to recognise that the Parliament of India reflects the spirit, the expectations, and the aspirations of the people of India,” the minister said.

Irani claimed that when he was an MP from Amethi, he had never posed any questions in Parliament.

The minister further said the citizens hope the Parliament of India is used as a productive platform to bring forth issues of national importance.

Earlier on Tuesday, Rahul Gandhi joined the Opposition protest against inflation and the 5 per cent goods and services tax (GST) price on essential items in front of the Gandhi statue in Parliament on the second day of the Monsoon Session.

Standing before the statue of Mahatma Gandhi in the Parliament premises, the Opposition leaders shouted slogans, calling for the government to reduce the prices of essentials. The first day of the Monsoon Session saw ruckus and disruption amid the opposition stir in both the houses, which were adjourned within hours.

The Monsoon Session of Parliament commenced on July 18 and will continue till August 12.
