Preeti Sudan, former union health secretary, has been appointed as the chairperson of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). A current member of the UPSC, Sudan will officially assume her new role on Thursday, August 1, succeeding Manoj Soni, who resigned earlier this month citing personal reasons ahead of the end of his tenure.

Who is Preeti Sudan?

Preeti Sudan, an IAS officer from the Andhra Pradesh cadre of the 1983 batch, brings nearly 37 years of extensive experience in government administration. She holds degrees in Economics and Social Policy and Planning from the London School of Economics and has undergone training in public finance management in Washington.

Distinguished Career

Sudan’s career is marked by significant contributions across various sectors. She served as the union health secretary for three years until July 2020, playing a pivotal role during the Covid-19 pandemic. Her strategic leadership was instrumental in managing the health crisis.

Before her tenure as health secretary, Sudan was the secretary of the Department of Food and Public Distribution. She has also held positions in the ministries of Women and Child Development and Defence, handling finance and planning, disaster management, tourism, and agriculture. Additionally, she has experience as a consultant with the World Bank.

Contributions to National Programs

Preeti Sudan has been a driving force behind several key national-level programs. She was integral in the initiation of the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao and Ayushman Bharat missions. She also played a crucial role in the legislation of the National Medical Commission, the Allied Health Professionals Commission, and the ban on e-cigarettes.

International Roles

Sudan has held several prominent international positions. She served as the Chair of COP-8 of the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control and was the Vice Chair of the Partnership for Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health. Additionally, she was a member of the WHO’s Independent Panel for Pandemic Preparedness and Response, further showcasing her global expertise and leadership.
