New Delhi: BJP leader Ramesh Bidhuri, known for his controversial statements, has once again stirred outrage with remarks targeting Delhi Chief Minister Atishi and Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. His comments, made during a public event in Delhi on Sunday, have drawn criticism from rival parties and civil society alike.
Remarks Against Priyanka Gandhi Vadra
In a widely circulated video, Bidhuri promised to make roads in his Kalkaji constituency “like Priyanka Gandhi’s cheeks.” He compared his pledge to an infamous statement by RJD leader Lalu Prasad about actor and BJP MP Hema Malini, stating that unlike Lalu, he would deliver on his promise.
Controversial Comments on Atishi
Bidhuri also targeted Delhi Chief Minister Atishi, formerly known as Atishi Marlena, with an objectionable comment about her surname. He reportedly said Atishi had “changed her father,” sparking outrage from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Congress.
AAP spokesperson Priyanka Kakkar condemned the remarks, stating, “Imagine if he becomes an MLA and the kind of attitude he will have toward women. The women of Delhi will take revenge at the ballot box.”
Bidhuri Expresses Regret Amid Backlash
Amid growing criticism, Bidhuri posted a message on X (formerly Twitter), expressing regret if his comments had hurt anyone. He accused political rivals of misinterpreting his remarks for electoral gains. “It was not my intention to insult anyone. Still, if any person has been hurt, I express regret,” he said.
Delhi BJP Distances Itself
Delhi BJP chief Virendra Sachdeva called for restraint in language and respect for women, while also accusing the Congress of hypocrisy for not condemning similar remarks in the past. “Respect for women and maintaining control over language is our duty, and such statements are not welcomed by us,” Sachdeva said.
Elections Looming
The controversy comes as Delhi gears up for Assembly elections next February. The BJP, which has been out of power in the national capital since 1998, is leaving no stone unturned in its efforts to unseat the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which has dominated Delhi politics since 2013.
With the row showing no signs of abating, the remarks have added to the charged political atmosphere ahead of the crucial polls.
