Maharashtra’s Shinde government has decided to remove Tipu Sultan’s name from a Mumbai park, reversing the decision taken by the previous Uddhav Thackeray regime.
The Maharashtra government led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has decided to reverse a move by the erstwhile Uddhav Thackeray regime and remove Tipu Sultan’s name from a garden in Mumbai’s Malad area.
Mumbai Suburban District Guardian Minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha has ordered the Collector to rename the garden named after Tipu Sultan in Malad. Lodha took to Twitter to share the development and wrote, Finally, victory of the Right! Ordered removal of name Tipu Sultan from the park in Malad after considering the protests by Sakal Hindu Samaj & demand by @iGopalShetty Ji in the DPDC meeting. Last year MVA govt had named the ground after Tipu Sultan and we had to protest it!”
Some people had put up a banner, calling it Tipu Sultan garden and locals had resisted it. It was never named formally in the first place. So I asked the authorities to do the needful and remove the illegal banner,” said Lodha.
If it has to be named, we will follow due process. Nobody really wants to associate Tipu Sultan’s name with the park,” he said.
Meanwhile, NCP spokesperson Mahesh Bharat Tapase said no government can become popular by renaming places or reversing other’s decisions.
The government is yet to reveal the new name of the garden. According to sources, the decision was taken as Tipu Sultan is a controversial name in neighboring states like Karnataka.
The naming of the park was allegedly opposed by the BJP earlier.
