Shri Satish Kumar Takes Charge as Chairman and CEO of Railway Board

Shri Satish Kumar, a veteran of the Indian Railways, has officially taken charge as the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Railway Board under the Ministry of Railways. This appointment, sanctioned by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, marks a significant milestone in Shri Kumar’s illustrious career spanning over 34 years.

Shri Satish Kumar, an esteemed officer of the 1986 batch of the Indian Railway Service of Mechanical Engineers (IRSME), has been recognized for his remarkable contributions to Indian Railways. His journey began in March 1988, and over the decades, he has held numerous pivotal roles across various zones and divisions, consistently driving innovation and efficiency within the railway system.

Educated at the prestigious Malaviya National Institute of Technology (MNIT), Jaipur, where he earned a B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering, Shri Kumar furthered his education with a Post Graduate Diploma in Operation Management and Cyber Law from Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU). His robust academic background has been a cornerstone of his professional achievements.

Throughout his career, Shri Kumar has been a key figure in several critical projects that have significantly enhanced the operational efficiency and safety of Indian Railways. His early postings included roles at the Jhansi Division of the erstwhile Central Railway and the Diesel Locomotive Works (DLW) in Varanasi, where he developed his expertise in locomotive engineering and maintenance. His subsequent assignments at North Eastern Railway, Gorakhpur, and Patiala Locomotive Works further solidified his reputation as a leader in railway management.

One of Shri Kumar’s notable contributions is his commitment to Total Quality Management (TQM). Trained in TQM under the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in 1996, Shri Kumar has applied these principles across various projects, resulting in significant advancements in railway safety and reliability. His work on the Fog Safe Device, an innovation crucial for safe train operations during foggy conditions, has been particularly lauded, earning him recognition for enhancing the safety of railway operations during challenging weather conditions.

Shri Kumar’s leadership was also instrumental during his tenure as the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) of the Lucknow Division on Northern Railway from April 2017 to April 2019. During this period, he oversaw several infrastructural developments and successfully managed the railway services during the 2019 Kumbh Mela, a massive event requiring meticulous planning and coordination.

Before ascending to the role of Chairman and CEO of the Railway Board, Shri Kumar served as the General Manager of North Central Railway, Prayagraj, and held the position of Senior Deputy General Manager and Chief Vigilance Officer on North Western Railway, Jaipur. His expertise in overseeing traction and rolling stock across Indian Railways led to his appointment as Member (Traction & Rolling Stock) (MTRS), a key role within the organization.

As the new Chairman and CEO of the Railway Board, Shri Satish Kumar is expected to lead Indian Railways towards a future of enhanced passenger services, improved safety measures, and robust infrastructure development. His vision and leadership are anticipated to bring about significant positive changes, ensuring that Indian Railways continues to serve the nation with efficiency and excellence.
