India’s space ambitions have taken a giant leap forward as Shubhanshu Shukla is set to become the first Indian astronaut to travel to the International Space Station (ISS). His aspirations led him to the National Defence Academy, where he graduated before joining the Indian Air Force in 2006.
With over 2,000 hours of flight experience on various fighter aircraft, including the Su-30 MKI, MiG-21, and MiG-29, Shukla became a seasoned test pilot. His astronaut training began in 2019 when ISRO selected him for its ambitious Gaganyaan mission. After undergoing rigorous training at Russia’s Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center, he was later named the ‘Prime’ astronaut for India’s ISS mission.
India’s Role in the Axiom-4 Mission
The Axiom-4 mission is a private astronaut initiative by Axiom Space in collaboration with NASA. This mission will not only take Shukla to the ISS but also represent India’s deeper engagement in global space partnerships. Alongside astronauts from Poland and Hungary, Shukla’s participation highlights India’s growing influence in space diplomacy.
Commanded by former NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson, the mission will utilize SpaceX’s Crew Dragon spacecraft, launched aboard a Falcon 9 rocket from Kennedy Space Center, Florida. The 14-day mission aims to conduct scientific research and technological demonstrations, further advancing international space cooperation.
