Heavy Rains Trigger Disaster
In a tragic turn of events, Wayanad district in Kerala faced devastating landslides triggered by relentless heavy rains. Within a span of four hours, three massive landslides struck the hilly areas near Meppadi, resulting in the loss of at least 24 lives. Hundreds of residents are feared trapped, with roads swept away and connectivity severely disrupted.
Rescue Operations in Full Swing
Rescue operations have been launched on a large scale involving multiple agencies, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority. The Kannur Defence Security Corps and two Air Force helicopters are also set to join the efforts. The rescue teams are working tirelessly to reach the affected areas of Mundakkai, Chooralmala, Attamala, and Noolpuzha.
Prime Minister’s Assurance and Aid
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has assured full support to the Kerala government. In his communication with Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, he expressed his condolences and assured all possible help from the Centre. The Prime Minister also announced compensation of ₹2 lakh for the families of the deceased and ₹50,000 for the injured. He has urged BJP workers to assist in the rescue operations and has also discussed the situation with Union Minister Suresh Gopi.
Chief Minister’s Response
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has confirmed that all agencies have joined the rescue operations. State ministers are coordinating the efforts to ensure timely and effective assistance. The Chief Minister emphasized the importance of restoring connectivity to the affected regions. Health Minister Veena George mentioned the challenges faced due to collapsed roads and a swept-away bridge, making some areas unreachable.
Rahul Gandhi’s Condolences and Support
Congress leader and former Wayanad MP Rahul Gandhi expressed his deep anguish over the calamity. He extended his condolences to the bereaved families and hoped for the swift rescue of those trapped. Gandhi has been in touch with the Chief Minister and the district collector, urging them to ensure coordination among all agencies and to set up a control room for relief efforts. He also called on UDF workers to assist the administration.
Emergency Measures and Helpline
In response to the disaster, the state Health Department has established a control room for emergency assistance. Residents in need can contact authorities via helpline numbers 9656938689 and 8086010833. UDF MLA T Siddique reported that district authorities are formulating plans to airlift people from the severely affected Mundakkai area, although the complete information about the missing and deceased is still being ascertained.
The landslides in Wayanad have brought immense grief and challenges to the region. As rescue operations continue, the combined efforts of state and national agencies, along with support from political leaders, aim to bring relief to the affected residents. The priority remains the safe evacuation of those trapped and the restoration of essential services in the devastated areas.
