President Biden issued an order mandating that US flags be flown at half-staff for 30 days to honor Jimmy Carter, in accordance with US flag code. This period of mourning began upon Carter’s death and will continue until January 28, overlapping with Trump’s inauguration.
The US flag code specifies that flags should be lowered to half-staff for a 30-day period to honor current or former presidents. The regulation applies to federal government buildings, grounds, US embassies, military installations, and vessels.
Trump’s Limited Authority Until Inauguration
Trump’s frustration stems from his inability to alter the timeline until he officially assumes office on January 20. The proclamation, issued by the sitting president, remains in effect until its stipulated end.
Broader Context of Flag-Lowering
