Washington, D.C.: President-elect Donald Trump voiced his frustration over US flags being flown at half-staff on January 20, his inauguration day. The flags were lowered following President Joe Biden’s earlier decision to honor the late former President Jimmy Carter, who passed away recently.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump criticized the timing, saying, “Democrats are all giddy.” The former president expressed disappointment that his inauguration day would coincide with the 30-day mourning period decreed by Biden’s proclamation.

Trump Rages Over Flags Being Lowered To Half-Mast During Inauguration

Why Are Flags at Half-Staff?

President Biden issued an order mandating that US flags be flown at half-staff for 30 days to honor Jimmy Carter, in accordance with US flag code. This period of mourning began upon Carter’s death and will continue until January 28, overlapping with Trump’s inauguration.

The US flag code specifies that flags should be lowered to half-staff for a 30-day period to honor current or former presidents. The regulation applies to federal government buildings, grounds, US embassies, military installations, and vessels.

Trump’s Limited Authority Until Inauguration

Trump’s frustration stems from his inability to alter the timeline until he officially assumes office on January 20. The proclamation, issued by the sitting president, remains in effect until its stipulated end.

Broader Context of Flag-Lowering

The US flag code also allows flags to be lowered to half-staff for other significant occasions, including the deaths of vice presidents, Supreme Court justices, and members of Congress, although the mourning period is shorter. Flags can also be lowered to commemorate national tragedies or on Memorial Day.

During periods of mourning, state flags and other flags flown alongside the US flag are also required to be lowered to maintain the American flag’s prominence.

Nation Mourns, Politics Persist

While the nation mourns the loss of Jimmy Carter, Trump’s comments highlight the persistent political tensions. Despite the controversy, the 30-day mourning period underscores a tradition of honoring former presidents, even amid political and ceremonial transitions.
