Police have arrested two men in connection with the alleged withdrawal of over Rs 50,000 from the account of a person through the e-wallet application PhonePe in North Delhi’s Burari area.

The accused have been identified as Sanjay, 40, a resident of Mukundpur and Rahul Dass, 24, a resident of Burari.

On November 3, Sandeep Sharma had filed a complaint about the loss of his mobile phone. When he bought a new phone on November 5 and activated the SIM card, he found that his PhonePe wallet was active and an amount of Rs 52,860 was withdrawn by an unidentified person. He filed another police complaint at the Burari station.

During the investigation, on the basis of the records obtained from the e-wallet application the beneficiary was identified and thereafter Sanjay and Dass were arrested from Burari on November 6.

The police found out that Rahul, who is tech-savvy, after laying his hands on the lost phone unlocked it, reset all security codes for the e-wallet app and transferred the money to pan shop owner Sanjay in six to seven transactions. Sanjay kept a part of the money with himself and handed over the remaining in cash to Dass, the police said.

The police besides recovering the mobile phone of the victim also found a new device worth Rs 20,000 from the possession of Dass
