Ukraine has altered a number of its military plans in the wake of a leak of “highly classified” Pentagon documents, reports have claimed this morning. These leaks, of US intelligence documents, had been posted on social media in the last few weeks, sparking an investigation by Washington.
CNN reports that US officials have claimed at least some of the documents are authentic. They show the extent of spying on the likes of American allies Israel and Ukraine. The documents also allegedly outline “critical shortages” in the Ukrainian military. Now, a source close to Ukrainian President Zelenskyy has claimed that some of Ukraine’s military plans have now been changed.
However, it is worth noting that a number of Ukrainian officials have dismissed the documents as “fake”. Mykhailo Podolyak, an adviser to Mr Zelenskyy, previously said they are “based on a large amount of fictitious information” and have “nothing to do with Ukraine’s real plans”.
South Korea says it is aware of an apparent leak of several highly classified US documents which detail its private conversations about Ukraine. An official said Seoul plans to discuss the “issues raised” as a result of the leak, which first emerged on 6 April, with the US. The American intelligence documents were posted on social media, offering a partial, month-old snapshot of the war in Ukraine, it is claimed.
A number of US officials have confirmed the authenticity of the documents to the American media, but Ukraine has claimed there is no evidence they are real. One of the leaks, seen by the Reuters news agency, contained details about internal discussions among top South Korean officials.
These were regarding pressure on Seoul to help supply weapons to Ukraine, and its policy of not doing so. The document, which does not appear to have a date on it, said that South Korea had agreed to sell artillery shells to help the US replenish its stockpiles, insisting that the “end user” should be the American military.
But internally, top South Korean officials were worried that the US would divert them to Ukraine. The report was based in part on signals intelligence, which suggests the US had been spying on South Korea – one of its most important allies.
