Ukraine has recovered 37 kilometers (around two square kilometers) of territory near the eastern city of Bakhmut in the past week, the country’s deputy defence minister has said. He also claimed that Ukrainian forces had successfully repelled Russian attacks at Kupyansk (Kharkiv region) and Serebryansky (Lyman region).
A Russian missile attack has struck the southern Ukrainian city of Kryvyi Rih, according to the country’s interior ministry. The ministry offered no detail as to the scale of the attack, or if anyone had been injured – but we’ll bring you more as we get it. Some unverified videos circulating on Ukrainian telegram channels claim to show a nine-story building on fire with a gaping hole in its side.
Minister for internal affairs confirmed that one person has died and a search is ongoing after two missiles hit residential buildings in the southern city. “One rocket hit the four-story building of the educational institution,” he said on Telegram. “There are probably people under the rubble. Rescuers and police are working.” The second rocket destroyed a section of a residential building spanning five floors, causing a fire, he added.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned on Sunday that “war” was coming to Russia after three Ukrainian drones were downed over Moscow. “Gradually, the war is returning to the territory of Russia — to its symbolic centers and military bases, and this is an inevitable, natural, and absolutely fair process,” Zelensky said on a visit to the western city of Ivano-Frankivsk.
“Ukraine is getting stronger,” he added, warning however that the country should prepare for a new attack on energy infrastructure in winter. “But we must be aware that, just as last year, Russian terrorists can still attack our energy sector and critical facilities this winter,” Zelensky said, adding those preparations for “all possible scenarios” were discussed in Ivano-Frankivsk.
Zelensky spoke after three Ukrainian drones were downed over Moscow early on Sunday, the Russian defence ministry said. The attack damaged two office towers and briefly shut down an international airport. The attacks reported Sunday were the latest in a series of recent drone assaults — including on the Kremlin and Russian towns near the border with Ukraine — that Moscow has blamed on Kyiv.
Separately, Moscow said on Sunday its forces had thwarted a Ukrainian attempt to attack Russia-annexed Crimea with 25 drones overnight. Meanwhile, Russia is prioritizing amending legislation to allow more troops to be rapidly drafted into its military to fight in Ukraine, according to the UK’s Ministry of Defence.
