Delhi’s first woman mayor in 10 years

Voting began on Wednesday to elect the new mayor of Delhi as the municipal House met after three previous failed attempts to hold the election to the top post. The proceedings of the municipal House began on Wednesday to elect the new mayor of Delhi, the exercise taking place after much delay since the high-stakes civic polls.
AAP candidate Shelly Oberoi claimed victory in the Mayoral polls, with 150 votes. The BJP, meanwhile, garnered 116 votes. As many as eight councillors abstained from voting in the mayoral polls. Shelly Oberoi defeated Bhartiya Janata Party’s Rekha Gupta by 34 votes.
Delhi Deputy CM Manish Sisodia took to Twitter to congratulate Oberoi, saying, “The goons have lost, people have won. I congratulate all workers on the election of an AAP mayor and thank the people of Delhi once again. Many congratulations to Shelly Oberoi, AAP’s first mayor.”
Born and brought up in Delhi, Shelly Oberoi joined AAP as an activist in 2013 and was the party’s state Mahila Morcha vice-president till 2020. She holds a PhD in management studies from IGNOU’s School of Management Studies and is a lifetime member of the Indian Commerce Association. Besides DU, she has also taught at several other universities like NMIMS, IP and IGNOU.
