Mysuru city police arrested a man who cheated on women he met on matrimonial websites by posing as an engineer or doctor and marrying them. Officers suspect he has married at least 15 women since 2014 and have at least four children.

The accused has been identified as Mahesh K B Nayak, 35, a resident of Banashankari in Bengaluru. He was arrested after a software engineer from Mysuru, whom he married earlier this year, filed a complaint. The police soon formed a team to track him down and apprehended the accused in Tumakuru.

Although he studied only till Class 5, the accused often claimed to be a doctor, engineer, or civil contractor, the police added. Among the women he married, four had children with him. Another woman has also come forward claiming to be his victim.

According to the police, Nayak even set up a fake clinic in Tumakuru and employed a nurse to bolster his claim of being a doctor. However, his lack of proficiency in English raised suspicions among many potential victims, leading them to reject his marriage proposal.

The complainant in the case alleged that Nayak had harassed her for money to establish a clinic. When she refused, he fled with her jewellery and cash, the victim said. Interestingly, most of Nayak’s wives are financially independent professionals and they refrained from filing complaints due to embarrassment and fearing social stigma.

A police officer said the investigation revealed that Nayak’s father had also filed an attempt-to-murder case against him.
