Newgen giving Wings to the Leaders of Tomorrow

The concept of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) as a paradigm for businesses to follow has evolved from its early days. It should not be considered as charity or mere donations but a way of creating shared values and contributing to social and environmental good besides business as usual. It is no longer just a fashionable trend to adopt but a serious business requirement.
 

Newgen has actively contributed to the socio-economic development of the communities in which it operates, thus building a better, sustainable way of life for the weaker sections of society and raising the country’s human development index. It is its prime duty to be a socially responsible corporate citizens. Hence, the objective of the CSR framework at Newgen is to encourage the stakeholders to have a more meaningful engagement with the business rather than the oft-prevalent one-sided expectation. 

 

“The CSR initiative taken by Newgen is to impact the lives of the less privileged children, making their classroom learning fun, interactive and interesting through digital education. There is emphasis on personality development, health, hygiene, and everyday life skills to make the children independent, self-sufficient and responsible youth of tomorrow,” says Priyadarshini Nigam, CSR Head, Newgen Software.

 

For Newgen, reaching out to the under-served communities is in its DNA. Hence, it decided to cater to the less-privileged kids who are still not able to get the education they deserve. They still have to combat various circumstances to attend school everyday. However, many of them possess the potential equal to their privileged counterparts. It is just a matter of equal opportunities being presented to them to prove their worth.

Sadbhavna is one such initiative in Newgen’s CSR journey. The programme was commenced 12 years ago, in 2006, to support the education of less-privileged children and equip them with basic life skills. Interestingly, Sadbhavna, an informal programme, started by Newgen volunteers has garnered several success stories ever since.

 

“Some of the children who came to Newgen through the initiative were toddlers, some were seven or eight years old, while others were just entering their teens. Today, with their strong determination and hard work, some of them are pursuing professional courses, whereas others have taken up part-time jobs and are doing well. The students, who are in school, also aspire to pass with flying colours,” explains Priyadarshini.

 

It was the positive experience with Sadbhavna children which gave the company the passion and courage to initiate its core CSR programme, Newgen Digital Discovery Paathshala (NDDP). It was specially designed to develop the e-learning skills amongst students and to impart knowledge in schools through web-based technology. This stems from the company’s Managing Director, Diwakar Nigam’svision to transform classroom sessions into fun-learning activities and to make the school curriculum more meaningful.

 

The objective behind it is to stimulate young minds through modern-day IT innovations, like iPads and internet. The facilitators use various methodologies to impart knowledge such as role plays, quiz sessions, movies, and presentations while conducting the sessions. These not only enhance e-learning skills of the students but also generate curiosity amongst them.

 

Newgen approached the State Education Department and proposed to conduct the NDDP programme for a duration of 5 years at the Government Girls’ Senior Secondary School, Harkesh Nagar, Okhla. The school was officially adopted on 1st April 2016. During the academic year, April 2016 to March 2017, over 900 students of classes 6th and 7th attended the Digital Paathshala sessions. In April 2017, students of class 8th also joined the NDDP programme and Newgen furnished the classrooms for another 450 students. There was no looking back after that. Now, 1300+ children attend sessions every week at Harkesh Nagar School. After that, Newgen adopted Soami Nagar Model School for 150+ children in 2017.

 

In July 2018, Newgen adopted another Government Girl’s Senior Secondary School in Tekhand with 1400+ children of class 6th, 7th and 8th. Right now it is in the process of setting up their computer lab.

 

Another CSR initiative undertaken by Newgen is its collaborate with SOS Children’s Villages of India since 2014 to ensure holistic development of the children and their mothers living in three Family Homes in the Greenfields Village, Faridabad. It further expanded its SOS family by adopting three more SOS homes in Bhopal, becoming the first corporate to adopt these families in a non-metro.

 

To enhance the overall development of the children of Sadbhavna and SOS Youth Hostel, Newgen conducted personality development sessions with ‘I AM’ at regular intervals. Today, there are nearly 60 to 80 children who attend the sessions regularly.
