With Delhi set to go for the mayoral election on January 6, independent councillor Gajendra Dalal has joined the BJP.

Independent councillor from Mundka Gajendra Daral joined the BJP ahead of the Delhi mayor election scheduled to be held next month.

Gajendra Daral joined the BJP in the presence of the party’s state working president Virendra Sachdeva and former state president Vijender Gupta. Former MLA Manoj Shokeen, spokesperson Ajay Sehrawat and mandal president Shashikant Pandey were also present on the occasion.

While inducting Daral into the party fold, Virendra Sachdeva said Daral, who won the election as an independent from Mundka, has a simple personality and his joining the BJP will strengthen the party’s image.

The BJP is a party in which every worker has a different responsibility. We are sure Gajendra Daral will fulfill the responsibility given to him,” said Virendra Sachdeva.

Speaking on the occasion, Vijender Gupta said Gajendra Daral is a person who has a good hold in rural areas. “Daral is a young leader who has made a distinct identity in the area through his service and work. The BJP welcomes his decision to join the party.”

“I have joined the BJP as I believe in the ideology of the BJP and the spirit of service and work culture set by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. I will fulfill the responsibilities I have been entrusted with and never break the trust that the party has shown in me,” said Gajendra Daral.

The elections for the post of mayor and deputy mayor of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) will be held on January 6.

A statement issued by the MCD said the nominations can be filed in the office of the Municipal Secretary on any working day between 11am and 5pm.

Election for the six members of the standing committee will also be held in the first meeting of the House scheduled to be held on January 6.

This will be the first municipal House meeting consisting of 250 councillors, who have just been elected after the high-stakes civic polls held on December 4.

The election for the top post will take place nearly a month after the civic polls, results of which were announced on December 7.

The post of mayor sees five single-year terms on a rotation basis, with the first year being reserved for women, the second for open category, third for the reserved category, and the remaining two also being in the open category.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which won the MCD polls by bagging 134 seats, has already nominated Shelly Oberoi as its mayoral candidate and challenged the BJP, which secured 104 seats, to field candidates for the plum post from its own party rather than nominating independent candidates.
