Karnataka CM Basavaraj Bommai announced the immediate release of a Rs 500 crore relief package to restore basic amenities and infrastructure damaged due to heavy rains in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada.

Karnataka Chief Minister, Basavaraj Bommai, on Wednesday announced that Rs 500 crore would be released as an immediate measure to restore basic amenities and infrastructure damaged due to the heavy rains recently.

He further said that a comprehensive report on the losses due to rain will be secured from all districts. This will be sent to the Centre to seek relief under the National Disaster Relief Fund.

The CM made the announcement while interacting with the media at Manipal in Udupi after attending a review meeting on the havoc caused by rains in three coastal districts.

During the two-and-half hour meeting, officials from Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada informed the CM in detail regarding the damage to property and people in each district.

A total of 32 lives have been lost and five people are reportedly missing from the flooded areas. The coastal region of Karnataka has received excessive rains during July .

As many as 300 people are sheltered at different centres and 34 people have suffered injuries. Four teams each of NDRF and SDRF have been taking up the relief measures and 14 relief camps have been set up in the three districts, said CM Bommai.

Touching upon the sea erosion in the coastal areas, the CM said it could not be prevented effectively, despite the state spending around Rs 300 crore under the Asian Development Bank (ADB) project.

The government now plans to implement the sea wave breaker technology which has been used in parts of Kerala.

The pilot project will be taken up at Ullal in Dakshina Kannada district and a permanent scheme will be implemented based on its results. A detailed project report will be prepared before implementing it and funding will also be sought from external agencies, noted CM Bommai.
