India-Canada relationship continues to get bitter after PM Justin Trudeau alleged ‘Indian government link’ in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Amid this, reports have surfaced about Manipuri tribal association leaders’ meeting with Khalistan supporters in Surrey, Canada, which has alarmed Indian intelligence agencies.

President of the Canada chapter of NAMTA (North American Manipur Tribal Association), Lien Gangte, was at the Surrey Gurudwara whose control was snatched by Nijjar and turned into a base for anti-India activities. During his visit to the Gurudwara last month, the NAMTA president spoke about “atrocities on minorities” in India and what was happening to them. Gangte also urged the Canadian government to condemn the so-called human rights violation in India and the government of India on this. The NAMTA president even sought pro-Khalistani support to run protest rallies in America.

The Indian intelligence agencies have claimed that post the speech, Nijjar supporters had a meeting with NAMTA.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the US chapter of NAMTA wrote: “Our very own Lien Gangte, NAMTA Canada president, sharing with Surrey Gurdwara community. Thank you to our Sikh family for standing with our cause, our Kuki Zomi community in Manipur, India.”

Nijjar (45), Khalistan Tiger Force Chief, was killed in June 2023 by unidentified assailants on the grounds of the Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara temple, in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada. Nijjar was a wanted man in India, which has for years seen Sikh separatists abroad as a security threat.

Earlier this month, Canadian PM Justin Trudeau said his government was investigating “credible allegations” that Indian government agents were linked Nijjar killing. India has denied any role in the killing, calling the allegations absurd.

North America Manipur Tribal Association, or NAMTA, is a US-based organization that has been allegedly building anti-India and anti-Hindu narratives in America and across the globe since the beginning of the ethnic clashes in Manipur in May 2023. The association claims to represent the twin tribes from Manipur and Mizoram, and the northern parts of Myanmar’s Chin state.

It is alleged that NMATA is joining hands with pro-Khalistani terrorists to spread hate narratives against the Indian government and Hindu community of the country.
