Dahi Handi Festival: Maharashtra Govt Announces ₹10 Lakh Insurance Cover for 1.5 Lakh ‘Govindas’

In a major pre-festival announcement, the Maharashtra government has declared insurance coverage of up to ₹10 lakh for 1.5 lakh Govindas participating in this year’s Dahi Handi celebrations. This traditional festival is part of Janmashtami, celebrating the birth of Lord Krishna, where young participants form human pyramids to break an earthen pot filled with milk, curd, or butter suspended high above the ground.

🛡️ Government to Bear Insurance Costs

Recognizing the risks involved in the daring pyramid formations, the state government will fully bear the insurance cost for all registered participants. The coverage includes accidental injuries and fatalities during performances on August 16, the day of Dahi Handi.

📋 Verification and Registration Process

The Maharashtra State Govinda Association in Mumbai has been tasked with verifying the age, training, and participation of Govindas. These details will be submitted to the Commissioner of Sports and Youth Services in Pune.

💰 Key Benefits of the Insurance Scheme:

  • ₹10 lakh for death or total permanent disability (e.g. loss of both eyes or both limbs)

  • ₹5 lakh for loss of one eye, one arm, or one leg

  • Partial/permanent disability will be compensated as per insurer’s disability norms

  • Medical expenses up to ₹1 lakh covered for injuries sustained during the event

🙌 Promoting Tradition With Safety

The move is part of the government's effort to preserve cultural traditions while ensuring the safety and well-being of the youth participating in this high-energy, risky celebration.
