Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar Resigns Citing Health Reasons

Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, 74, resigned from office on Monday evening, effective immediately, citing medical reasons and the need to prioritize his health. His resignation, submitted to President Droupadi Murmu, falls under Article 67(a) of the Constitution of India.

Dhankhar underwent angioplasty at AIIMS earlier this year and had shown signs of ill-health at certain events, though he largely appeared active in public engagements. His term, which began in August 2022, was originally set to end in August 2027.

What Happens Next?

1. Vice Presidential Election Timeline

  • According to Article 68(2), an election must be held as soon as possible to fill the vacant office.

  • The electoral college for the VP election consists of members of both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, including nominated members.

  • The voting uses proportional representation by means of the single transferable vote.

2. Tenure of the New Vice President

  • The newly elected Vice President will hold office for a full five-year term from the date they assume office, not just the remainder of Dhankhar’s term.

3. Who Chairs the Rajya Sabha Now?

  • Until a new Vice President (and hence, Rajya Sabha Chairman) is elected, the Deputy Chairman, currently Harivansh (JD(U) MP), will oversee Rajya Sabha proceedings.

Who Could Be the Next VP?

While no official candidate has been announced, Harivansh is being discussed as a probable nominee due to his experience, current role as Deputy Chairman, and his rapport with the government.
