Although born in West Lafayette, Indiana, in 1966 to an Indian-origin family, Ghemawat spent much of his childhood in Kota, where he completed his early schooling before pursuing higher education in the United States. He earned a bachelor's degree from Cornell University in 1987 and later completed a PhD in Computer Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1995 under renowned computer scientists Barbara Liskov and Frans Kaashoek.
