A massive landslide struck the Mata Vaishno Devi Yatra route in Jammu and Kashmir’s Katra on Monday morning, leaving several pilgrims injured and a few temporarily trapped under debris. The incident occurred around 8 AM in the Banganga area, a key starting point on the old yatra track from Katra to Bhawan.
Sudden Collapse Sparks Panic
Eyewitnesses said that large stones and debris rolled down the mountain unexpectedly, hitting shelters and causing panic among the devotees. The affected area is a common stopover for pony riders and pilgrims, making it particularly vulnerable during peak yatra hours.
Rescue Operation in Full Swing
Emergency response teams, including Shrine Board staff, police personnel, palki and pitthu service providers, quickly launched a rescue operation.
At least four pilgrims were rescued from the debris and shifted to a local hospital for treatment. Officials say the quick response helped prevent a major disaster.
“Rescue teams acted swiftly, ensuring the safety of many pilgrims who could have been in greater danger,” said one eyewitness.
Shelters Damaged, Route Temporarily Closed
Shelters constructed along the yatra route were severely damaged due to the landslide. Authorities have temporarily suspended movement along this track until the debris is cleared and the area is deemed safe.
This part of the old yatra route is among the most frequently used by pilgrims heading to the shrine, with thousands walking daily.
