Odisha gov flood affects 4.67 lakh people across 10 districts, govt prepares for next spell of rain

At least 4.67 lakh people have been affected by the flood situation across 10 districts in Odisha, Special Relief Commissioner said on Wednesday.

Amid this situation, the administration is bracing itself up for the next spell of heavy rain from Thursday as forecast by the meteorological department, P K Jena said.

The Special Relief Commissioner said that over 2.5 lakh people in 425 villages have remained marooned, while a total of 4.67 lakh people have been affected.

More than 60,000 people were evacuated to safer places till Wednesday, the official added.

He further added that the administration is vigilant and are evacuating more people.

The flood water has entered villages and agricultural fields and is flowing over several bridges in the districts of Sambalpur, Subarnapur, Boudh, Cuttack, Khurda, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara and Puri districts.

Apart from the 10 districts in the state suffering from the calamity, some of the low-lying areas in Surat are also facing a flood-like situation due to the incessant rain in the region.

Nine teams each of NDRF and ODRAF have been deployed in vulnerable places, while 44 teams of the fire service have been engaged in relief and rescue operations.

The government has directed district collectors to close schools and educational institutions in flood-hit areas and to undertake evacuation of people from all vulnerable pockets, Special Relief Commissioner, Pradeep Kumar Jena said.
