Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has promised stringent action after the state reported three student suicides in two weeks.

In the last two weeks, three students have allegedly died by suicide in the state of Tamil Nadu. In Kallakurichi, a class 12 student allegedly jumped from the hostel building citing pressure from teachers. The death led to widespread violence in Kallakurichi.

The Tiruvallur student death also created a tense situation in the district and the autopsy was done amid high security to ensure no untoward incidents took place. The police suspect that family issues were the reason behind the suicide of a girl in Cuddalore. The three incidents took place within two weeks, raising concerns about the rise in the number of student suicides.

Addressing an event on Tuesday, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin said, “Few of the recent incidents have been saddening. School should be run as a service. You should impart self confidence, boldness and mental strength. Tamil Nadu students should be able to face all kinds of challenges. You should face your problems boldly, especially girl students. The Tamil Nadu government will not be silent and stringent action would be taken if girl students are troubled sexually or mentally or physically. No situation should push the girl students to take extreme steps.”

Meanwhile, state BJP president Annamalai has blamed the state’s education system for youngsters resorting to such extreme measures.

Annamalai said, “The main message that is coming out of the suicides is that the educational system of TN has failed miserably. The current system is forcing the students and pressurising them to get marks.”

“Only the new education policy will help students to study without pressure. The maximum number of student deaths post 12th exams is the highest in Tamil Nadu. I would suggest that CM forms a committee to set right the educational system in the state. The education model needs a quick fix,” he added.
