The Andhra Pradesh Assembly passed a Bill on Wednesday to rename NTR University of Health Sciences (UHS) as YSR UHS.

The Telugu Desam Party sought Andhra Pradesh Governor Biswabhusan Harichandan’s intervention as the state Assembly passed a resolution to rename NTR University of Health Sciences (UHS) as YSR UHS. TDP President N Chandrababu Naidu along with other party leaders appealed to Andhra Pradesh Governor against the Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy-led Andhra Pradesh government’s decision.

The YS Jagan Mohan Reddy-led government brought in a Bill to rename the NTR University of Health Sciences (UHS) as YSR UHS on Wednesday. The Bill was approved amidst strong protests by the opposition Telugu Desam Party and others.

The unilateral decisions taken by the government without considering the sentiments of the people have been brought to the attention of Andhra Pradesh Governor today,” N Chandrababu Naidu said on Thursday.

Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy justified the renaming of the UHS after his late father YS Rajasekhara Reddy, saying it was a well thought move to give due credit to Dr YS Rajasekhara Reddy and it wasn’t disrespect towards NTR.

The chief minister said due credit should be given to the deserving as Dr YSR, a practicing medical doctor before joining politics, was a pioneer in taking quality medicare to the common people with his innovative Aarogyasri besides the 108 and 104 ambulance services.

Of the existing 11 medical colleges in the state, nine were functioning even before TDP was formed and remaining has come into being with the initiative of Dr YSR.

Our government is adding 17 medical colleges to give a fillip to medicare. With this 20 of the 28 medical colleges in the state are due to the efforts of YSR and his son. This itself is a credit which qualifies the renaming of the Health University,” the Andhra CM said.
