A section of Muslims from the civil society handed a damage compensation cheque of Rs. 6.20 lakh to the Bulandshahr district administration to compensate the damage caused to public property during the anti CAA protest in Uttar Pradesh.
While handing over the cheque, they also requested the police to withdraw the charges lodged against the community members in the aftermath of the protest on December 20, when violence had also swept several other parts of the state.
Around 20 people lost their lives, and several others, including policemen were injured, ever since protest has unfolded in the state against CAA and NRC.
“It is a welcome initiative by the people here who have realized the property that has got damaged during the protest belonged to them and it involved their tax money”, said Bulandshahr district Magistrate Ravindra Kumar.
An amount of Rs. 6.27 lakh has been raised by donations within the community to repay the damage caused to the public property, said local councillor Haji Akram.
