The Centre merged the three civic bodies into a single MCD with Parliament passing the Delhi Municipal Corporation (Amendment) Act, 2022, ten years after the Sheila Dikshit-led Congress government had trifurcated it.  The unified Municipal Corporation of Delhi comes into effect from Sunday, as per the notification of the union government.

The term of the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) ended on May 18, while the term of the North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) ended on Thursday. The East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) will complete its tenure on May 22.
