Delhi’s Mega Metro Push: 97 km Expansion with 7 New Corridors Set to Transform Urban Connectivity

Delhi is preparing for one of the most ambitious public transport expansions in its history. The city government has approved a massive 97-kilometre expansion of the Metro network under Phase V-B, adding seven new corridors and 65 stations across the capital. Announced by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta during the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Foundation Day event, the project aims to extend rapid transit into underserved peripheral zones while easing pressure on the city’s congested transport arteries.

The expansion is being viewed as a strategic shift in Delhi’s urban mobility planning — from simply strengthening central corridors to integrating outer and emerging residential clusters into the mainstream transit grid.

Expansion Plan and Key Routes

The proposed Phase V-B network will connect major outer areas such as Najafgarh, Narela, Mithapur and Khera Kalan with key commercial and institutional zones in central Delhi. Urban planners say this marks a deliberate attempt to bring Metro access to areas that have historically depended heavily on road transport and overcrowded buses.

Among the most significant projects is the Central Secretariat–Kishangarh corridor, a roughly 16-km mostly underground line expected to become a crucial interchange spine. The route will connect densely populated and institution-heavy regions including RK Puram, New Moti Bagh and Jawaharlal Nehru University.

The corridor will also integrate with several existing Metro lines, including the Yellow, Violet, Pink and Magenta corridors, while linking to the upcoming Golden Line. This multi-layered interchange design is expected to reduce travel fragmentation and improve cross-city movement.

Other proposed routes aim to improve orbital connectivity by linking currently disconnected Metro lines, connecting industrial belts and newly developed housing clusters, and reducing dependence on overcrowded radial corridors leading into central Delhi.

Cost and Project Details

The total estimated cost of the expansion stands at approximately ₹48,204.56 crore, making it one of the largest infrastructure packages approved in recent years for the capital.

According to project estimates:

·       The first six corridors are expected to cost around ₹43,335 crore.

·       The seventh corridor has been estimated at nearly ₹4,869.56 crore.

The Delhi government has instructed DMRC to divide the Detailed Project Reports into priority and non-priority packages to streamline approvals and financing. Funding is likely to follow the established Metro financing model involving contributions from the Delhi government, the Centre, multilateral lending agencies and DMRC resources.

Officials have emphasised that the project is not only about transportation but also about inclusive urban development, cleaner mobility and long-term environmental sustainability.

Corridor Details and Timeline

The project will be implemented in phases. Four priority corridors — including routes covering Najafgarh, Narela, Mithapur, Khera Kalan and the Central Secretariat–Kishangarh stretch — are expected to be fast-tracked for completion by 2029.

The remaining three corridors will be developed later, allowing DMRC to stagger construction expenditure and operational planning while learning from the first phase of execution.

If completed on schedule, Delhi’s Metro network could exceed 470 kilometres in the next decade, strengthening its position among the world’s largest urban rail systems.

Why This Expansion Matters

The expansion reflects a major evolution in Delhi’s urban planning philosophy. Earlier Metro phases focused largely on connecting major commercial hubs and densely populated central areas. Phase V-B, however, prioritises the city’s “urbanising fringe” — regions where rapid residential growth has outpaced transport infrastructure.

This could significantly reduce road congestion, shorten commute times and encourage a larger shift toward public transport. The emphasis on orbital links is equally important because Delhi’s existing network remains heavily centre-oriented, often forcing commuters into unnecessary interchanges through crowded core stations.

However, execution remains the biggest challenge. Financing a ₹48,000-crore project alongside ongoing Phase IV construction will test both administrative coordination and fiscal discipline. Land acquisition, underground tunnelling and traffic disruption during construction could also create delays.

Building the Future Shape of Delhi

Delhi’s Phase V-B Metro expansion is more than a transport project; it is an attempt to redefine how the capital grows over the next decade. By extending connectivity to neglected edges while strengthening internal integration, the plan addresses both mobility and urban inequality. If executed efficiently and on schedule, the expansion could fundamentally reshape commuting patterns, reduce pollution and make Delhi a more balanced and accessible megacity for millions of residents.
