Ghaziabad Teen Murder: Justice, Encounter, and Lingering Questions

Prime Suspect Killed as Investigation Intensifies

The prime suspect in the murder of 17-year-old Surya Pratap Chauhan was killed in a police encounter in Ghaziabad's Vasundhara area on June 1, 2026, bringing a dramatic turn to a case that has triggered widespread outrage and heightened communal tensions. According to police, 19-year-old Asad, who had been absconding since the killing and carried a reward of ₹50,000, allegedly opened fire on a joint police team during an operation to apprehend him. Police retaliated, injuring him during the exchange. He was later declared dead at a hospital. A police constable was also injured, while another suspect managed to escape.

The encounter marks the latest development in a case that has gripped the Delhi-Ghaziabad border region and placed law enforcement under intense public scrutiny.

A Festival-Day Dispute Turns Fatal

The incident occurred on May 28, 2026, during Bakrid celebrations in Ghaziabad's Khoda Colony. Surya Pratap Chauhan, a Class 11 student and resident of Navneet Vihar, was allegedly called out of his home by a group of local youths, including the main accused.

According to statements provided by the victim's friends and family, the confrontation began after Surya was allegedly asked whether he wanted to witness a goat sacrifice associated with the festival's rituals. When he reportedly declined, an argument ensued that quickly escalated into violence.

Surya was allegedly stabbed multiple times in the abdomen and rushed to a private hospital in Noida. Despite medical treatment, he succumbed to his injuries the following day. The emergence of a CCTV clip purportedly linked to the incident further intensified public anger and demands for swift action.

Police Investigation and Arrests

Following a complaint filed by Surya's elder brother, police registered a case at Khoda police station. What initially began as an attempt-to-murder investigation was subsequently upgraded to a murder case after the teenager's death.

The FIR names five accused individuals. Before Sunday's encounter, police had already arrested three accused—Farhan, Assif, and Nawab—along with taking Asad's father into custody. Two additional individuals were detained for questioning as investigators worked to reconstruct the sequence of events.

Authorities say multiple teams were formed to track down the remaining suspects, with intelligence inputs eventually leading police to Asad's location in Vasundhara.

Rising Tensions and Security Measures

The murder has generated significant unrest in Khoda and nearby localities, where residents and members of the victim's family staged protests demanding immediate arrests and strict punishment for all those involved. The cremation was reportedly delayed as grieving relatives sought assurances of justice.

To prevent any escalation, authorities deployed more than 300 police personnel along with two Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) battalions. Political leaders and local representatives also visited the bereaved family, while calls for strong administrative action grew louder.

As of June 1, one accused remains absconding, with investigators tracing his last known location to Haryana. Heavy police deployment continues across sensitive areas as authorities monitor the situation closely.

Justice, Law, and the Challenge Ahead

The Ghaziabad teen murder has evolved from a local criminal case into a sensitive law-and-order challenge with broader social implications. While the death of the main accused has altered the course of the investigation, important questions remain regarding the role of other suspects and the circumstances surrounding the crime. As police pursue the final absconding accused, the focus will remain on ensuring a thorough investigation, legal accountability, and the preservation of communal harmony in a region already grappling with heightened tensions.
