Lt General Dhiraj Seth: Soldier, Strategist, India’s Next Army Chief

Lt General Dhiraj Seth will be India’s next Chief of Army Staff, the government announced on Saturday, marking a significant leadership transition in the Indian Army. He will assume office on June 30 following the retirement of the current Army Chief, General Upendra Dwivedi. Widely regarded as an experienced operational commander with extensive exposure to both conventional and counter-insurgency warfare, Lt Gen Seth’s appointment reflects the Army’s emphasis on strategic continuity and professional military leadership.

Background of the Appointment

Before being named the next Chief of Army Staff, Lt General Dhiraj Seth was serving as the Vice Chief of Army Staff, a position he took over on April 1, 2025. An alumnus of the prestigious National Defence Academy (NDA), Khadakwasla, he was commissioned into the Armoured Corps—specifically the historic 2nd Lancers regiment—in December 1986.

His elevation to the Army’s top post comes after nearly four decades of distinguished service across varied operational theatres, including desert warfare sectors, high-intensity military formations, and counter-insurgency operations in Jammu and Kashmir. Over the years, he has built a reputation as a tactically sound commander and a strategic planner with deep institutional experience.

A Career Defined by Operational Leadership

Lt Gen Seth’s professional journey reflects a blend of field command, instructional roles, and strategic leadership responsibilities. Early in his career, he served with the United Nations Angola Verification Mission (UNAVEM-III) between 1995 and 1996, gaining valuable international operational exposure.

He also held several important instructional appointments, including Instructor and Assistant Adjutant at the NDA and Chief Instructor at the School of Armoured Warfare in Ahmednagar. These roles contributed to shaping future military leadership while strengthening his expertise in mechanized warfare.

Over the years, he commanded an armoured regiment in the desert sector, the 98 Armoured Brigade, and a counter-insurgency force in Jammu and Kashmir. He also commanded the renowned Skinner’s Horse regiment, one of the Indian Army’s most decorated cavalry units.

After promotion to Lieutenant General, he took charge of the Sudarshan Chakra Corps (21 Corps) in Bhopal, one of the Army’s key strike corps formations. Later, he served as General Officer Commanding of the Delhi Area, where he oversaw critical national and ceremonial military responsibilities.

Strategic Command and Academic Distinction

At the Army Commander level, Lt Gen Seth achieved the rare distinction of heading two major operational commands along the western front. He served as General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the South Western Command in Jaipur before leading the Southern Command in Pune from July 2024 to March 2025.

His academic record has been equally distinguished. He stood first in the Junior Command Course and received the Best All-Round Student Officer Medal at the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington. He is also a graduate of the Higher Command Course, National Defence College, and attended the prestigious Command and Staff Course in Paris.

His decorated military career includes the Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM), Uttam Yudh Seva Medal (UYSM), and Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM), reflecting exceptional operational and service contributions.

Leadership Shaped by Experience and Strategy

Lt General Dhiraj Seth’s appointment as India’s next Army Chief represents the culmination of an accomplished military career defined by operational excellence, strategic leadership, and professional distinction. At a time of evolving regional security challenges and rapid military modernization, his extensive command experience and balanced operational background are expected to provide continuity, stability, and strategic direction to the Indian Army’s future leadership.
